Heading to the South Pole
A Spanish expedition leaded by the explorer Ramón Larramendi manages to reach the Geographic South Pole on a sophisticated sled, that could revolt the investigations in the completely frozen regions.
The Spanish Catamaran
Consists on a polar catamarán, a “boat-sled” that travels through the ice with the wind’s help. which can carry thousands of kilograms in an autonomic way.

The Super Polar Catamaran
An exhibition about the recent Spanish Expedition that crossed the Antarctic has been inaugurated. The vehicle used that is the first 100% ecologic one to reach the South Pole, counts with the explorers’ and scientists’ admiration.
The eco-efficient sled that reached Antarctica
Solar energy, wind power and frozen water have been the resources that have been counted on for the design of this way of transport that has helped the South Pole’s expedition to cover 3.500 km without generating CO2 emissions.

Acciona’s Expedition Party: Get closer to the South Pole
Coinciding with Amundsen’s and Scott’s centernary of their arrival to the South Pole, ACCIONA sent an expedition to Antarctica, that proved for the first time the efficiency of an eco-efficient and zero emissions vehicle.
The picture of the week: this is how you experience an expedition to Antarctica
More than 3.500 km covered and 45 day navigating of a wind-propelled sled, without CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, are some of the numbers that the Acciona Windpowered Antarctica’s expedition has spotted. With Ramón Larramendi heading the expedition that has come to its end coinciding with the centenary of Scott’s arrival to the South Pole.
Reaching the South Pole on an eco-efficient sled
A team of Spanish explorers have reached the Geographic South Pole on board of a wind-propelled sled. On board of this sled they covered over 3.500 km in 19 days through the white continent. The sled is inspired in Inuit Techniques, which are the Eskimo civilizations that used to live in the Arctic Regions of America and Greenland.

Oficialdegui, waiting on being able to fly to Chile
Ignacio Oficialdegui, from Pamplona, and his three colleagues from ACCIONA’s WindPowered Antarctica expected to depart to Punta Arenas (Chile) from Union Glacier, the American Base on the Antarctica.
Larramendi also finishes with Antarctica
Acciona’s expedition comes to the end of its journey through the frozen continent on a 100% eco-friendly vehicle. It’s the third Spanish Team that accomplishes this challenge on the centenary of Amundsen’s arrival to the South Pole.
Oficialdegui accomplishes his challenge
Oficialdegui, Larramendi, Alba and Selva are waiting to be moved today to the Union Glacier Base.
Yesterday at 11.30, Ignacio Oficialdegui López from Pamplona and his colleagues from the Acciona WindPowered Antarctica Expedition (Ramón Larramendi, Javier Selva and Juan Pablo Albar) completed 3.400 km from the journey from coast to coast through Antarctica that had begun on December 11th.
A trip to the Polar Dreams
El Vigía
Cruising through the remotest place on the planet, propelled by the wind power, has been the dreamed project by all explorers since Amundsen’s and Scott’s era in 1911. From then on, there have been a lot of trials constructing the sailing boat and at first seemed unsteerable because of the size needed.

The journey is supposed to get to its destination today after cruising almost 3.500 km using the wind force and solar panels, to move and also charge their electronic devices.

With a bit of luck, we might be able to meet with Ignacio Oficialdegui and Ramón Larramendi at Hercules’ Bay. They will most likely come on their polar Catamaran. It would be nice to encounter a known face in a place like this.
Cadena SER. Ramón Larramendi: “After two days with no rest and non-stop navigation, we reached the South Pole”
The leader of Acciona’s expedition to the South Pole, that’s already 160 kms aways from the South Pole, told us how the members of the team lived the experience of the arrival to the South Pole and how they are now heading towards the South American sector of Antarctica.

Larramendi and his team, within 500 miles
It is clear that the commemoration of the centennial of man’s first arrival at the South Pole, by Roald Admunsen, has inspired many people with the same spirit of adventure to emulate what happened on December 14, 1911.
A “café con leche” at the South Pole
Oficialdegui and the Acciona expedition, about 500 kilometers from their destination
“We are going slower than we expected. We are still 500 kilometers away from the South Pole. We are in no hurry, although, of course, the sooner we get there, the better.” Pamplona-born Ignacio Oficialdegui was that clear this morning. Ignacio, the first Navarre native to have reached the South Pole on land, is a member of the scientific expedition Acciona Windpowered Antarctica (with Ramón Larramendi, Juan Pablo Albar and Javier Selva).

The adventure that never ends
By Sebastián Álvaro
At this time of year, it seems like we’ll have to go along with another of the established traditions and take a look back at the 2011 highlights. The hairs on my arm still bristle when I remember how, earlier this year, the winter expeditions to Karakorum achieved the ‘impossible’ challenge of making the summit of one of the five mountains in Pakistan, until then never climbed in winter. Since I was there a few years ago, I know what it takes to endure two months in a place where, in the words of an eighteenth century explorer, “we sacrifice our health, our feelings, our joys, for the honor of following a course that no one before has ever followed.” My good friend Alex Txikón was there as well. He didn’t make it by very little, and he will make another attempt in a few days. It’s something similar to the two polar expeditions these days in Antarctica, led by Ramón Larramendi (probably the best Spanish polar explorer of all time) and Alberto Iñurrategui (perhaps the best Spanish climber alive).

The first Expedition on an eco-efficient sled.
ACCIONA has the solution: the start of a great adventure which is an Expedition to Antarctica on an eco-efficient sled for the first time. As Amundsen and Scott made it to the South Pole a hundred years ago, this time we want to demonstrate the efficiency of a vehicle like the one mentioned, which’ aim parts from the lack of transportation in the polar regions.

When we talk about sustainability or sustainable tourism, when usually think about overpopulated zones that are in risk of having over polluted areas. Or in the other hand we might think of exploitation zones in which we want to preserve the good state they’re in and protect them as much as possible.

Two alpinist groups and Spanish explorers commemorate the arrival to South Pole’s centenary with two expeditions in The Frozen Continent.
“We have done 21 km already, half of the propelled by kites and the other half with the sleds. It’s freezing cold, between 30 and 37 degrees below zero; but we’ll have to cope with it”, this was The Basque Teams’ last communication.

Larramendi goes back to Antarctica in a vehicle propelled by the wind
desnivel.com
The polar explorer Ramón Hernando de Larramendi leaves today, December 1st to Antarctica. His aim: being the first expedition in the world able to reach de Geographic South Pole on a zero emissions wind powered vehicle exclusively propelled by the forces of nature.
The Acciona WindPowered Antarctica’s expedition managed by Larramendi and sponsored by Acciona, it formed by four people: Juan Pablo Albar (mountaineer and scientific investigator from the CSIC, responsible for the scientific program), Javier Selva (photographer, responsible of all communications) y Ignacio Oficialdegui (biologist specialized in wind powered energy).

Today, December 1st. The explorer Ramón Larramendi goes on a trip to Antarctica, with the company of his colleagues: Ignacio Oficialdegui, Juan Pablo Albar and Javier Selva. His aim is to travel 3.500 kms, non-stop, during 30 days, with a zero emissions vehicle propelled solely by the wind force.
Ramón Larramendi is the expedition’s manager. In this expedition we will be able to test a new vehicle designed by him: the polar butterfly, based on the use of kites as a propulsion method for dragging a sled. Propelled, like this, solely by the wind with four persons on board and a charge of a ton. The four crew members will take turns to cruise 3.500 km non-stop, reaching the South Pole in 30 days.
